Mongolian Children
I'm back! and...with another project :) This blog entry will be a little bit different from the 2 i wrote earlier because this is not a project that I did.,but it is one that my sister did. Since I have been busy with homework lately..and I know that many of you are also busy..I have decided to include in my blog community service ideas that others have shared with me. What do you think? ~~
My sister (Jennifer) has done a lot of volunteer work with Mongolian children. She even got to go to the Gobi Desert with my dad's Rotary (LUCKY!!) she said that it was a very cool place that I should visit..BUT! I should be careful when visiting because I might have to try CAMEL MILK (kind of weird huh?) She said that it is a delicacy there and that it is rude to say no :( So, maybe I will try and stay away from the camel milk for another few years..here is what her project was about!
What was her project?
She went to the Gobi Desert in high school with my dad and almost 100 other Rotarians to help plant trees in the desert. There is a big problem there with Yellow Dust (Asian Dust) and it is affecting the people in not only Mongolia, but also the surrounding countries. I know this is true because I am allergic to dust and when the Yellow dust is carried over to Korea in the Spring-- my eyes are ALWAYS watering! so, it is a big problem!
The second part of her project was collecting money for her sweet 16th birthday party to pay for Mongolian children's heart surgeries. It is very sad because many Mongolian children are born with holes in their heart and do not live a long time because of them. My dad's Rotary club brought a few children to Korea to have the surgery (because it is hard to do in Mongolia) and my sister helped pay for the costs.
What have I learned from my sister's project?
Even though I could not travel to the Gobi Desert or participate in my sister's project, I learned that there are many other ways to help people in need. Like, collecting donations at a birthday party, or having a bake sale (we could make yummy chocolate chip cookies and sell them to friends and teachers at lunch time!) or donating old books that we read when we were babies. I noticed that I have so many dolls and books in my room that I do not play with or read anymore and I think that giving them to people that want them is better than keeping it hidden in my room. My sister inspired me to be creative in the ways that I help people. I hope that I have also inspired you.
Well..I should probably get back to my homework now..........too bad my homework assignment isn't to think of a creative way to do a fundraiser! because then I would already have many answers :)
Stay tuned till next time!! lol~~
