Project #4

The Raphael Clinic

What is the Raphael Clinic?

This clinic runs only on Sundays by a group of doctors and medical students. It is a clinic that offers free help to immigrant workers in Seoul.

How did I help?

On Sunday, we sold donated goods to the immigrant workers visiting the Raphael Clinic!
Me with the other girls selling clothes :) ~~ They were so cute!
**
When we went to the clinic, there were so many foreign workers lined up waiting to get medical service from the doctors. I think it is so wonderful that these doctors volunteer their Sundays helping people for free. On days that we do not sell clothes to the immigrant workers, the Rotary club members sometimes set up tables with free food for the visitors too!

Here are pictures of my sister, her friend, and I serving and eating some food :)

You can find them on facebook too!

Mongolian Project Pictures

Surprise! I'm back earlier than you thought HUH?? =P =P =P

SOOOOO I asked my sister for some pictures of her Mongolian fund-raising events and she sent me some! Here are some photos for you to enjoy!

She couldn't find any pictures from her sweet 16 party, but she sent me photos from the Lunar New Year Charity Event her club hosted at her college. She said that they had an auction for donations, a performance, and even taught people how to cook special Korean dishes! She said that it was a big success!

She wanted me to post this one............this is her and the club members with the performers

I hope that I also have the opportunity to do a charity event like this at my school. I am not yet sure how I would organize an event, but maybe my sister help me out!

Now I have even more ideas flowing in my head..but I will save them for my next post :)

Project #3

Mongolian Children

I'm back! and...with another project :) This blog entry will be a little bit different from the 2 i wrote earlier because this is not a project that I did.,but it is one that my sister did. Since I have been busy with homework lately..and I know that many of you are also busy..I have decided to include in my blog community service ideas that others have shared with me. What do you think? ~~

My sister (Jennifer) has done a lot of volunteer work with Mongolian children. She even got to go to the Gobi Desert with my dad's Rotary (LUCKY!!) she said that it was a very cool place that I should visit..BUT! I should be careful when visiting because I might have to try CAMEL MILK (kind of weird huh?) She said that it is a delicacy there and that it is rude to say no :( So, maybe I will try and stay away from the camel milk for another few years..here is what her project was about!

What was her project?
She went to the Gobi Desert in high school with my dad and almost 100 other Rotarians to help plant trees in the desert. There is a big problem there with Yellow Dust (Asian Dust) and it is affecting the people in not only Mongolia, but also the surrounding countries. I know this is true because I am allergic to dust and when the Yellow dust is carried over to Korea in the Spring-- my eyes are ALWAYS watering! so, it is a big problem!

The second part of her project was collecting money for her sweet 16th birthday party to pay for Mongolian children's heart surgeries. It is very sad because many Mongolian children are born with holes in their heart and do not live a long time because of them. My dad's Rotary club brought a few children to Korea to have the surgery (because it is hard to do in Mongolia) and my sister helped pay for the costs.

What have I learned from my sister's project?
Even though I could not travel to the Gobi Desert or participate in my sister's project, I learned that there are many other ways to help people in need. Like, collecting donations at a birthday party, or having a bake sale (we could make yummy chocolate chip cookies and sell them to friends and teachers at lunch time!) or donating old books that we read when we were babies. I noticed that I have so many dolls and books in my room that I do not play with or read anymore and I think that giving them to people that want them is better than keeping it hidden in my room. My sister inspired me to be creative in the ways that I help people. I hope that I have also inspired you.

Well..I should probably get back to my homework now..........too bad my homework assignment isn't to think of a creative way to do a fundraiser! because then I would already have many answers :)

Stay tuned till next time!! lol~~

The Flea Market

Here are some photos from the flea market:
It was a very cold day, but it was worth it! I think we were able to sell a lot of the recycled items :)
There were also many students there involved with (Rotary Interact) which is the younger/student version of the Rotary Club. I wish my school had Interact too so that I could join!!

Some of the clothes~~

My dad and his Rotary friend with the younger Interact students from a Korean school.

Here is my dad again! maybe when I am a little bit older..I will be a Rotary member too!
I don't have any photos of what the smaller stores look like, but if you take a look at the website again (http://www.beautifulstore.org/Eng/about/work.aspx) there will be more information and photos about this organization!

Until next time...stay warm and come back to my blog for another visit!

Project #2

The Beautiful Store

What is the Beautiful Store?

The Beautiful Store in Korea is a Non-profit foundation that takes donated items like clothes, shoes, electronics, etc..and re-sells them at lower prices. They have many small stores around the city and they also host a flea market to sell the donations they collect. The profit from the sales is then used for donations to other causes.

How did I find out about this organization?

I found out about this project one day after cleaning out my closet. I put all of the clothes that were too small for me in a pile to give away for donations (I usually do this at the beginning of every year). I asked my mom where she gives my old clothes too and she told me about the Beautiful Store. She said that she has done a lot of work with this foundation.

Check it out!
http://www.beautifulstore.org/Eng/about/work.aspx

My mom said that there is a flea market even coming up that I can help out at!! I will put pictures up after!

Have any old clothes, electronics, toys, or things that you don't use any more??

WELL..........you can donate it to the Beautiful Store!!

Summing up Project #1

A while ago i had decided to knit baby hats for babies in Tanzania, Africa. I had first gotten this idea from my teacher at school who had been knitting hats for babies in Africa and sending them through Save the Children.
The Rotary Club had decided to build a birth clinic in Tanzania. Through my father who is a member of The Rotary Club i got an idea to send baby hats to the birth clinic being built in Tanzania.

Here is a site about the trip to East Africa that the Rotary Club members wrote.

**
This project inspired me to do more community service with my dad's Rotary Club and I hope they have another idea soon.  I really enjoy helping other people because I think everybody needs a little bit of help time to time. If we all lend one of our two hands to another person, we can really make a difference together!

Keep checking back with my blog to see what Project #2 is about!

To be continued... :)
